The artist walks most days along the coastline near her studio and documents the changing horizon. She is interested in how natural environments effect the psychology of human beings and the rituals we invent in order to interact with the natural world, and finds it fascinating how we are driven by instinct to pick up precious and unusual natural objects from childhood. 'Origin' is inspired by this.
This current body of work is informed by the natural world and forces such as tidal, gravitational, seasonal and chronological. The colours are a palette taken from the landscape where the artist works, a seaside village called Seaview, with its pastel buildings, boating paraphernalia and bleached signage. Hummel-Newell chooses paper as her primary material for its familiarity, having been touched by the hands of many within the everyday.
